In Spanish there are two different Simple Past tenses, instead of just one as in English. One is called Pretérito Indefinido or Pasado Simple. The other one is called Pretérito Imperfecto. The latter is used in sentences of the kind of “used to”.

2) I used to have a car = yo solía tener un auto = yo tenía un auto
