“Soy feliz” can work in very specific situations. But typically it would sound very awkward. Because happiness is an emotional state that can change. It’s not supposed to be permanent. Thus, it has to be used with the the Spanish verb “estar“.

If we use “feliz” with the Spanish verb “ser” like in “soy feliz” it is implying a static state of happiness. Kind of a “Buddha-like” perfect state of permanent happiness. This is more like an abstract statement. That is why it sounds awkward.

“Happy” can translate as “alegre” only sometimes. Because usually we would use “joyful” instead.
